Electricity and Water consumption Bills are a major part of Household expenses in many parts of the world. As the cost of energy sources rises, Governments and utility companies are compelled to increase rates. But in many Countries basic units are provided free or a very low rates considering they are essential services. If Consumers can contain their usage within those basic rate, they are able to save a lot as the consumption increases, the rates will increase and what ever units they save will be saved at Higher rate.

How to save Electricity at Home

Unplug Appliances

Turning off appliances is not good enough. In the common household, idle electronic devices--turned off but still plugged in--account for 75 percent of the electricity used by the devices. Plug electronic devices such as televisions, VCRs, stereos and computers into a power strip. Cut electricity to the devices when you're not using them by flipping the power strip switches to "Off."

Look for the Energy Star

For larger appliances, such as clothes washers and dishwashers, purchase an energy-efficient unit. Look for the Energy Star label, which denotes a government seal of approval for energy efficiency.

Upgrade Light Bulbs

Swap out conventional incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescents. They are more expensive to buy, but last significantly longer and use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. According to an article called "13 Simple Ways to Lower Your Electric Bill" on the SmartMoney website, one CFL bulb can save an estimated $35 in energy costs over its 10-year life span. CFLs also generate less heat, which lowers cooling costs.

Regulate Room Temperature

Arrange for an inspection to make sure a home's heating, air-conditioning and ventilation systems function smoothly. During summer months, keep window blinds closed by day to keep the sun out and lower cooling costs. Also, limit daytime use of heat-generating machines, such as the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and oven. These appliances produce more heat and more work for air-conditioning systems.

Use a Laptop instead of Desktop

The conventional desktop computer consumes 150 watts of electricity during standard use, as compared to laptop computers, which consume 15 to 25 watts. Laptops also draw less power than desktops while in sleep mode, but unplug the laptop cord when you're not using it, as with other appliances.

  1. We can help saving Earth by recycling and saving electricity. One of the causes of carbon emission comes from cars and electricity that we've been using everyday. There's nothing wrong with using energy, but we can lessen carbon emission by saving electricity and using eco-friendly gas. If we save electricity, we will only pay cheaper electric bill, and we already helped lessen the heat. To be able to save electricity, and avoid problems, it is better that you double check your electric wiring, like I've done. I live in St. Paul. Electrician that I hired was the one who checked our electrical wiring.
